Humility

Humility is a great Christian virtue, but people who are humble usually don’t know that they are, and people who think they are, aren’t.

I recently heard someone pray, “Lord, humble me.”  I thought to myself, “I want the Lord to help me to be humble, but I don’t know if I want Him to humble me.”  There is a difference.

A humble person is not a person who has no self-esteem, or who puts himself down.  A humble person, in a biblical sense (the only kind that really counts) is a person who is willing to be counted a fool for Christ.  He is willing to embarrass himself, if need be, in order to do something for God.  He is someone who doesn’t think of how things are going to make him look in the eyes of others, nearly as much as he thinks how things are going to make Christ look in the eyes of others.

God resists the proud, but He gives grace to the humble.
